The Kings were made as a visual response to the Contain Arts publication of an illustrated copy of Shakespeares Tempest.

Gonzales  Act 2 scene 1

“Our Garments being as they were drenched in the sea, hold notwithstanding their freshness and glossiness being rather new-dyed than stained with salt water”

“Methinks our garments are now as fresh as when we put them on first in Africa at the marriage of the kings fair daughter to the King of Tunis”

Originally I made the first three kings for a book that was being published on The Tempest , Alonso the King of Naples, Sebastian his brother and Ferdinand his son

They were based on the moment that the Kings party arises from the sea with their clothes bearing no trace of the Tempest that had shipwrecked them.
